Settle–Carlisle vs West Highland Line: which should you ride?

By Does Your Duck Quack ·

Choose Settle–Carlisle for an English upland railway day; choose the West Highland Line when a longer Scottish break can give the lochs, moor and coast room. Our preference for the bigger landscape journey is West Highland, while Settle–Carlisle is often the more manageable choice within a northern England holiday. This is an editorial verdict about the kind of trip, not an official ranking of the two railways.

The starting point matters. A route that looks shorter on a map can still create a long day once the journey from home is added. Compare the complete outing, including reaching the first station, a pause at the far end and the return. If that calculation removes nearly all the time off the train, choose a shorter section or stay overnight. Both routes reward a plan that gives the destination a place alongside the landscape.

The West Highland offers more than one version of the day. The complete Glasgow–Mallaig journey differs from Fort William–Mallaig, and the seasonal Jacobite is a separate train booking on part of the same railway. Settle–Carlisle can be enjoyed as an ordinary scheduled ride with selected station stops. Decide whether the wish is a particular heritage excursion, a through transport journey or an independent day of stops before comparing ticket options.

Window advice should follow the named section and direction. West Highland through trains change direction at Fort William, so the full guide explains the physical seat change needed to keep the preferred facing-forward side. For both lines, a clear window, daylight and the actual train matter more than a seat number alone. Choose the itinerary first, reserve where useful and use the direction cards to understand what is ahead. The table summarises the choice; the two linked guides provide the practical detail and official operator links needed to make that choice into a booked trip.

    Settle–Carlisle Railway

Our verdict for a northern England day is Settle–Carlisle. Choose it when the holiday already puts you near the route and an upland crossing with a town pause is enough. Make one stop substantial and keep the return unhurried; the strongest plan leaves time to enjoy the place reached as well as the train.

    West Highland Line

Our verdict for a longer landscape break is West Highland. Give it an overnight and decide whether Glasgow–Fort William, the continuation to Mallaig or the shorter coastal section is the main ride. Use a separate day for the Jacobite if steam is important, keeping its excursion booking distinct from scheduled ScotRail travel.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better for a day trip?

Our preference is Settle–Carlisle when starting nearby in northern England. A shorter Fort William–Mallaig outing is another option when already staying in Lochaber. Judge the complete journey from your base.

Which has the broader range of scenery?

Our editorial choice is West Highland for the combination of moorland, lochs and the coastal continuation towards Mallaig. Settle–Carlisle remains our choice for an English upland railway day.

Can both be part of one holiday?

Yes, with separate days and a sensible journey between the bases. Avoid trying to make each complete route a hurried outing from the same distant starting point.
