About this journey

The journey begins with the Loughor Estuary and Llanelli before turning into the Tywi Valley towards Llandeilo and Llandovery. Cynghordy Viaduct carries the railway around a curve before the climb to Sugar Loaf and its tunnel. Beyond the watershed, Llandrindod Wells introduces the Radnorshire spa towns, then Knighton and the border country lead towards Shrewsbury. The line connects rural communities across south, mid and border Wales; its estuary, river valleys and uplands are distinct stretches of one long railway journey.

A simple map can make this trip look like a direct crossing; the pleasure lies in its meandering route. The estuary and southern towns give way to a different landscape around Llandovery, Cynghordy and Sugar Loaf. Further north, Llandrindod Wells and the border country bring another chapter. Keep just a few markers in mind as you ride. The train does not need to be treated as a sequence of moments that you must photograph or tick off.

Watch both sides and choose a window where you will be comfortable for a long ride. This guide does not promise a single preferred side throughout the line. Pay attention to the relationship between the railway and the ground around it: the broad estuary, a valley crossing, the more enclosed upland stretches. At Sugar Loaf, let the tunnel interrupt the view and enjoy what comes next. A comfortable journey with occasional photographs can be more rewarding than watching everything through a camera.

The places along the route are good reasons to slow the itinerary down. Llandeilo offers a town visit and the separate possibility of Dinefwr. Llandrindod Wells adds spa-town heritage, museums and the lake, while Knighton gives a border-town focus. Pick one that matches your interests. If you are walking, choose the station and the route together, letting the walk be the main activity of the break.
