Manchester Piccadilly → Sheffield
Top stop: Grindleford

Manchester–Sheffield crosses the Peak District through a sequence of valleys and tunnels. The approach through Stockport and New Mills leads to Cowburn Tunnel, then Edale opens the central landscape. Hope and Bamford follow before Hathersage and Grindleford. Totley Tunnel carries the railway towards Sheffield. Edale is a walking base below the high moorland; Hathersage gives access to a village and the routes towards Stanage. The railway reaches the valley floor, while the higher walking destinations require a separate ascent.
Scenic Rail Britain highlights Cowburn Tunnel and the rugged scenery around the valley stations. The contrast between enclosed stretches and open country gives the ride its rhythm. Have the station sequence to hand, then let the views occupy your attention. If walking is the main purpose, the railway is a pleasant beginning and end to that outing; it need not become another activity to fit around it.
The community rail guide also points to the Steel Cotton Rail Trail, with routes linking stations. Use one of its published walks when you want a point-to-point day, choosing the distance and terrain to suit your party. For a first visit, keep things simpler: Edale village time or a Hathersage break, with a meal and room for the return. A longer walk towards Stanage belongs in a deliberate walking plan.
This 40-mile scheduled railway slips out of Manchester, crosses the Pennines through Cowburn Tunnel and opens into Edale and the Hope Valley before tunnelling beneath the moors again for the approach to Sheffield.
Choose Edale for a walking day, Hathersage for the village and a route towards Stanage, or the full Manchester–Sheffield ride for the railway's tunnels and valleys. High moorland walks require a separate ascent, navigation and weather check. The train serves the valley floor. Check which services call at the chosen station and leave walking time on the return; a fast through train may not provide the local stop needed.
