About this journey

Choose the Jacobite when the train itself is the centrepiece of the holiday. The engine, heritage carriages and return to the same starting point make this a different proposition from catching a local service between two towns. Set aside the day, keep the evening uncomplicated and let the railway determine the rhythm. If the priority is reaching Mallaig for a ferry or spending several hours at an intermediate station, start with the scheduled West Highland Line guide instead.

The film connection is real: West Coast Railways says it supplied the locomotive and carriages used for the Hogwarts Express scenes. Its own account identifies the film engine as 5972 Olton Hall. Riding the present Jacobite gives you the railway landscape associated with those scenes, including Glenfinnan Viaduct, but a booking should be based on the advertised excursion and available carriage class. Do not assume that a particular film locomotive or compartment is included in your departure.

Glenfinnan is the moment to prepare for before the train arrives on the curve. Put away a bag that blocks the window, have the camera ready and take a few seconds simply to look across the glen. The viaduct is part of a working railway: the operator says slowing on the crossing depends on time, and the station pause also depends on the timetable. Plan around a moving view and treat any longer pause as a welcome extra.

Beyond the viaduct, keep watching. The journey continues through loch country towards Arisaig and Morar before ending at Mallaig. Resist using the rest of the ride only to review photographs of the bridge. The contrast between inland water and the coast gives the excursion its shape, and the return is a second chance to see a stretch obscured by rain or reflections. Choose a small number of landmarks to recognise instead of trying to photograph every bend.
