This is a scenic section that can be enjoyed on an ordinary intercity journey. CrossCountry describes the Newcastle–Edinburgh route as offering Northumberland coastal views, while the sea’s position gives a clear window choice: right northbound and left southbound. Select a daylight departure and reserve where the operator allows it. A through ride is worthwhile on its own, but a stop at Berwick can turn a quick journey between cities into a more substantial coastal day.
Alnmouth is the first named coastal destination we would put in the plan. The operator’s station information identifies it as serving the village, but station arrival and a beach visit are separate parts of the outing. Check the walk or local transfer before buying a train-specific return. From the carriage, keep watching the sea-facing side as the landscape opens; on a stopping day, choose enough time for the village and the journey back to the platform.
Further north, the railway runs along the Northumberland coast towards the area opposite Holy Island. The mapped alignment puts the sea and the island side to the right towards Edinburgh. Regard a distant island sighting as a possible bonus in clear conditions, not a guaranteed close view from every carriage. If Holy Island itself is the destination, it needs a separate plan with the access and tide information checked directly. A passing railway glimpse does not replace that visit.
The Royal Border Bridge carries the railway over the River Tweed at Berwick. Network Rail explains that the bridge is entirely in England; its name should not be read as the exact point where the train enters Scotland. Have the camera ready before the station approach and also look downriver. A Berwick stop gives an opportunity to see the railway crossing from the town, adding the view of the bridge itself to the experience of travelling over it.
