Choose Severn Valley Railway for riverside stations and a journey towards Bridgnorth, Gloucestershire Warwickshire for Cotswold countryside and Broadway, or North Norfolk for the railway between Sheringham and Holt. These three lines give a Midlands and East of England steam weekend three very different landscapes to choose from.

Severn Valley’s route connects Kidderminster Town with Bridgnorth through Bewdley, Arley, Highley and Hampton Loade. The river, Victoria Bridge and preserved country stations make intermediate pauses part of the appeal. Start with the intended end point and the operating calendar, then select one break along the way. A station visit near the Severn and a full-line journey to Bridgnorth can both work, but they leave different amounts of time for exploring.

The Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway starts at Cheltenham Race Course and runs through Toddington towards Broadway. The Cotswold escarpment, Greet Tunnel and Stanway Viaduct give the ride its landmarks, while restored stations provide places to step off the train. Broadway’s heritage terminus and the village visit are separate parts of the outing, so use the full guide’s existing walking and access information before filling the day.

North Norfolk Railway begins at Sheringham and passes Weybourne on the way to its country station outside Holt. The coast, heath and woodland make a smaller-scale alternative to the inland river and escarpment journeys. Sheringham also offers the scheduled rail approach, useful when the preserved railway is the centrepiece of a car-free break. A station pause at Weybourne and a town visit beyond Holt’s railway terminus need different planning.

We group these lines as choices for separate weekends, not as a single compact circuit. Kidderminster, the Cheltenham area and Sheringham sit in different parts of the country, with distinct approaches to the heritage starting stations. Steam and diesel can both appear in the dated programmes, so consult the locomotive information when choosing a train. The entries below keep the existing seat advice and connect to detailed guides for stops, transport and accessibility, allowing the railway itself enough room in the day.

Our choices and how to plan them

    Severn Valley Railway

Severn Valley Railway links Kidderminster Town with Bridgnorth through preserved stations beside the river and surrounding countryside. Victoria Bridge is a distinctive point in the journey, while Bewdley, Arley, Highley and Hampton Loade offer different reasons to pause.

The current full-line timetable supports a journey through to Bridgnorth, so avoid relying on older assumptions about a shortened route. Decide which station deserves time before selecting the return train. The full guide follows the river-facing outlook and sets out the existing walks and access considerations, keeping a village stop separate from the longer rail journey.

    Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway

Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway carries the journey from Cheltenham Race Course through the Cotswold countryside towards Broadway. Greet Tunnel and Stanway Viaduct add clear railway landmarks to the changing views of the hills and escarpment.

Toddington is a focus for the preserved railway, while Winchcombe and Broadway offer other station-based plans. Choose one of those pauses before using the current calendar to build the day. The route guide distinguishes a railway station visit from any onward village walk and explains the existing window advice. Steam and diesel workings vary with the advertised programme.

    North Norfolk Railway

North Norfolk Railway connects Sheringham with the country terminus outside Holt through Weybourne, coastal outlooks, heath and woodland. Its shorter preserved route works well when the railway ride and a seaside base are the main aims of the day.

Sheringham provides the scheduled rail approach, while Weybourne offers a restored station and railway activity along the line. Holt’s railway station is separate from the town, so use the existing guide for the onward plan. The operator’s opening calendar and locomotive information define the visit, including special services; station parking arrangements can change for events.

Plan a weekend

Sheringham makes a coastal base for a weekend focused on North Norfolk Railway and the scheduled Bittern Line approach. For Severn Valley, compare accommodation around Kidderminster or Bridgnorth; for the Cotswold route, use the intended heritage station and its transfer arrangements. Each deserves a separate base instead of a long cross-region dash between trains.
