Which side to sit on the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway

Choose the left towards Broadway for the Vale of Evesham and distant Malverns, with the Cotswold escarpment opposite; choose the right towards Cheltenham for the vale.15

Facing forwards: favour the left window.

Choose the left (facing forwards) towards Broadway for the Vale of Evesham and distant Malvern Hills, especially on the open northern section beyond Toddington. The Cotswold escarpment is on the right towards Broadway. Near Gotherington the railway curves towards Greet Tunnel, so this is a preference for the broad vale views, not a fixed compass direction throughout.8

Broadway to Cheltenham Race Course

Facing forwards: favour the right window.

Choose the right (facing forwards) from Broadway towards Cheltenham Race Course for the Vale of Evesham and, in clear weather, the Malvern Hills. The Cotswold escarpment is on the left on the run towards Toddington. Greet Tunnel and the curves around Gotherington interrupt the long outlook; Stanway Viaduct carries the train above the valley.8

Why ride it

The view from the train

The appeal is a railway day at the foot of the Cotswolds, with preserved stations and a destination worth leaving the carriage for. Take the complete route on a first visit and choose Broadway or Toddington as the main pause. The railway’s getting-here information describes the line between Cheltenham Race Course and Broadway, with Toddington and Winchcombe along the way. Choose the boarding point that makes sense for the wider journey, not just the first station listed on a timetable.

The railway describes views of farmland, woodland and the Cotswold escarpment. Watch the changing relationship between the line and hills instead of expecting one constant panorama. Cuttings, buildings and the tunnel interrupt the view, while open stretches give the landscape room. Both sides have interest, so our advice is to choose a comfortable clear window and use the return to see more. We do not assign an unsupported universal side to the escarpment.

Stanway Viaduct and Greet Tunnel are the principal engineering landmarks named by the railway. They add variety to the countryside journey: one carries the train across open space, the other briefly removes the view altogether. Prepare a camera for the viaduct section without making a photograph the only purpose of the ride. The more rewarding outing includes the station stops and the train at work, giving the engineering a place in the whole landscape.

Broadway is the northern terminus, but the railway station and village visit need to be thought about separately. Use the operator’s getting-here information for the connection and walking route. Allow a substantial gap for a village visit and choose a later return in advance. If the timetable gives only a short turnaround, stay near the railway and enjoy the station, leaving Broadway’s longer walk and meal for another part of the holiday.

Best stops on the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway

Choose one main stop for a day out. Distances are one way from the station unless a circuit is stated; walking times are our estimates except where the attraction publishes one. Allow-time suggestions include time to look around.

Stop 1

Winchcombe

2910113

Combine the railway’s Discovery Coach with Winchcombe Museum in the town centre.

From the station: 1 mile (around 25 minutes’ walk)109

How we measure

The museum publishes approximately a mile from the heritage station at Greet; walking time is our estimate.

Check the next train back before leaving the station

Request stop: No — use a service shown as calling here.2

What is nearby

  • Winchcombe Museum — The museum occupies the old Town Hall and includes local history and the Winchcombe meteorite story.

From the platform

The station is at Greet, outside the historic centre. Follow the station access to Greet Road and continue into North Street towards the Town Hall junction; the museum publishes approximately one mile from the railway. Allow for a gradual rise into town.

Access: The GWSR provides boarding ramps and staff-assisted level crossings at its main stations; Winchcombe’s curved platform can leave a larger train gap. The town museum has step-free ground-floor access and a lift to its upstairs rooms.

Food and drink

  • Coffee Pot Café — The station café serves drinks, sandwiches and light refreshments on the platform, useful before the town walk.

Allow time: Allow 2–3 hours for the town museum and railway displays; a separate Sudeley Castle visit needs a longer plan.

Stop 2

Toddington

212133

Stop at the operating hub for railway activity and the neighbouring narrow-gauge line.

From the station: at the station; no onward walking distance12

How we measure

Check the next train back before leaving the station

Request stop: No — use a service shown as calling here.2

What is nearby

  • Toddington station and North Gloucestershire Railway — The narrow-gauge railway is beside the main station; check its own operating information before promising a second train ride.

From the platform

Follow the public station signs from the platform to the café and visitor areas; the neighbouring narrow-gauge railway is beside the station, without a walk into Toddington village. Keep to public paths around the working railway.

Access: Toddington has the GWSR’s largest level tarmac parking area and ramp-assisted boarding at the main platforms. Use staff-directed level crossings if stairs are unsuitable; an operating railway yard is not an unrestricted visitor route.

Food and drink

  • Cotswold Halt Café — The café is at the heart of Toddington station, providing a meal stop at the railway’s main hub.

Allow time: Allow around an hour for the station and café, adding time only if the neighbouring railway is operating for the visit.

Stop 3

Broadway

21415163

Leave the northern terminus for Broadway’s High Street and its museum in Tudor House.

From the station: about 0.9 miles (around 25 minutes’ walk)1514

How we measure

Check the next train back before leaving the station

Request stop: No — use a service shown as calling here.2

What is nearby

  • Broadway Museum & Art Gallery — The museum at 65 High Street explores the story of Broadway in the village’s historic setting.

From the platform

Walk down the station access, follow Station Road towards Lower Green, then continue through The Green and High Street to the museum, about 0.9 miles. The road into the village rises gently; this is more than a platform-side stroll.

Access: The station approach has an upward slope and the railway provides assisted platform crossings where needed. Broadway Museum publishes its own access guide: check it before combining the street walk with the historic building.

Food and drink

Allow time: Allow 2–3 hours for the walk, museum and village, leaving time to return to the station outside the centre.

How to get to the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway

By train

Reach Cheltenham Spa on the national network from Birmingham, Bristol or London, then transfer by road to Cheltenham Race Course station for the heritage railway. The GWSR is separate from the main line. From the north, Evesham is another useful railhead for the Broadway end, with the onward bus or taxi planned separately.5

By bus

The operator identifies Stagecoach D/E links between Cheltenham Spa, the town centre and the racecourse entrance, followed by a published fifteen-minute walk through the grounds to the heritage station. For Toddington and Winchcombe, check Pulhams 606; for Broadway, the GWSR lists an infrequent R4 link from Evesham station. Confirm the exact route for the travel date before booking.5

By car

The GWSR publishes parking at its four main stations. Toddington has its largest car park; Broadway uses the council car park opposite the station approach, and Winchcombe has limited on-site parking. For Cheltenham Race Course, enter through the main racecourse entrance and follow the railway’s directions to its parking area.53

Returning from the far end

A full south-to-north trip finishes at Broadway, outside the village centre. Return to Cheltenham Race Course on the heritage line if the car or onward rail connection is there, then allow the walk through the grounds before the bus. A Broadway overnight makes the village visit easier to separate from the rail day.25

Day trip or overnight

Our preferred first visit is a full return with one longer stop at Broadway or Toddington. Begin with the dated operating calendar and select the starting station that works with your arrival. Cheltenham Race Course station is a heritage boarding point; plan the transfer from the ordinary railway separately. If visiting Broadway village, include the station-to-village journey and a firm time to begin heading back.1

Accessibility

The railway’s accessibility page identifies wheelchair boarding at Broadway, Toddington, Winchcombe and Cheltenham Race Course, and accessible toilets at those four main stations. Confirm the suitable train accommodation and any space limits with the operator. Avoid building an assistance-dependent trip around a smaller halt without specific confirmation. Consider the village walk or onward transfer as well as the platform and carriage.3

When to go

Services are seasonal and run on selected dates in the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway calendar. Timetable colours and event descriptions matter: the trains, stopping pattern or open section can differ. Choose an ordinary running day for a first landscape-focused visit unless a gala is the purpose of the outing. Read the dated notices before travelling, and use only the advertised route when planning stops.1

Tickets

The railway publishes separate timetable and ticket information. Select the running date, identify the outward and return trains, then choose the product that permits the intended outing. Compare a direct return with a rover-style plan only when there is actually time to use extra trains. A day spent repeatedly boarding can leave less space for the destination that made the railway attractive in the first place.

Look at the advertised traction if steam is important to the visit. Diesel operations and mixed events can be part of the programme, and special trains may use different booking arrangements. Treat an event ticket as a distinct purchase, reading its inclusions and conditions. Keep all members of the party aware of whether the priority is a particular locomotive, a full-line journey or a longer pause at Broadway.27

Photography

Use the viaduct section for a broad landscape photograph if the window and light cooperate. At stations, we would favour a composition that includes the platform setting as well as the locomotive. Remain in permitted visitor areas, keep the platform edge clear and respect staff directions around working trains. A complete rail day provides several photographic opportunities without needing access to the lineside or a rushed walk back from the village.14

On board

Heritage seating and the slower pace invite a relaxed journey, but the return train still deserves attention. Carry a small bag, layers for station stops and the timetable saved offline. Check refreshments with the railway when choosing the departure instead of depending on an outlet at every station. If moving between carriages is difficult, establish suitable seating with staff at boarding and let the station visits provide the breaks.324
