We like the coastal part of the Fife Circle network for the change from central Edinburgh to the open Forth and the shore towns beyond it. The red steelwork of the Forth Bridge is the memorable opening, followed by a journey through Fife with coastal views around Burntisland, Pettycur Bay and Kinghorn. Kirkcaldy is the endpoint in this guide. We are describing that coastal journey, not every station on a full circuit of the wider network.
Take the direct coastal train first, enjoying the bridge and shoreline before deciding on a stop. A later visit can use Aberdour, Burntisland or Kinghorn as the beginning of a coastal walk, but the path and station access need their own planning. The full ride to Kirkcaldy is a useful half-day option from Edinburgh. If you want more than one town, read the calling pattern carefully: a service in the Fife timetable is not automatically the right departure for every intermediate stop you have chosen.
A scheduled ScotRail journey from central Edinburgh to Kirkcaldy that crosses the UNESCO-listed Forth Bridge before following the southern Fife coast. After the bridge's red steelwork and wide estuary views, the line alternates between wooded slopes, bays and seaside towns around Aberdour, Burntisland and Kinghorn.
For an easy half-day, ride from Edinburgh to Kirkcaldy and return on a dated ScotRail service, allowing time for the waterfront or town centre. A fuller day uses separate tickets or an appropriate day product to break the journey at Aberdour or Burntisland: Aberdour station is within walking distance of the village and Silver Sands, while the Fife Coastal Path links several shore towns. Check the next practical train before starting a walk, and do not assume every service calls at every intermediate station. An overnight in Kirkcaldy gives more time for a coastal-path section without building the day around the final return to Edinburgh.
