Pant → Pontsticill → Torpantau
Top stop: Pant

We like this railway as a reservoir-and-mountain outing with a clear beginning and return. Pant is the visitor base, followed by the woodland and water around Pontsticill and the climb to Torpantau. The changing height and landscape give a short heritage ride a substantial sense of progression. The train does not take you into Brecon town, so use Pant as the starting point when planning transport.
Choose the advertised full return for a first visit, leaving the Pontsticill pause as part of the experience. The upper terminus is exposed and has limited facilities, while Pant and Pontsticill have different roles in the day. A ride-and-guided-walk product can offer another way to visit, but it needs its own itinerary. There is no need to add an independent mountain route simply because the train ends high above the valley. The reservoir outlook and the journey back are enough for a rewarding half-day.
A return heritage steam journey from Pant, north of Merthyr Tydfil, into Bannau Brycheiniog National Park. All-weather observation carriages follow the Taf Fechan Valley through woodland, run alongside the reservoirs and climb to the exposed terminus at Torpantau.
Allow a half-day for the standard full return from Pant. The outward train runs through to Torpantau; on the return it stops at Pontsticill, where the railway advertises time for the lakeside café, play area and a short reservoir stroll before continuing to Pant. The complete experience is advertised at about 1 hour 40 minutes, but use the date-specific booking page because operating days and departure times change. A one-way ride can be paired with one of the railway's advertised guided walks, but Torpantau has no formal parking and an independent walk needs its own route and return-transport plan. An overnight in Merthyr Tydfil makes a less hurried base for combining the railway with the wider national park.
