We like Island Line because the journey begins over the water and then becomes a useful local railway across the island’s east side. Ryde Pier gives a memorable opening before the train passes through town, crosses inland country around Brading and reaches the resorts towards Shanklin. The compact length does not make the whole route a sea-wall ride: some of its best coastal visiting happens after you get off.
Use the line as the spine of a car-free day. A mainland ferry, a train ride and one destination can be enough, especially on a first visit. If the plan includes the separately operated steam railway, confirm Smallbrook Junction’s service and the heritage timetable; not every train provides the connection. Shanklin, Sandown and Brading give different outings. Choose the one that suits your group, then add a second only if the rail and ferry departures leave room to enjoy it without rushing.
A compact scheduled electric railway linking the passenger ferry at Ryde Pier Head with Shanklin. The journey begins over the water on Ryde's long pier, passes through Ryde and the open country around Brading, then serves Sandown and Lake before reaching the wooded seaside resort of Shanklin.
For a car-free day from the mainland, use a through rail-and-ferry journey or leave a generous margin between the Portsmouth–Ryde catamaran and the Island Line train. Ride to Shanklin for the town, beach or onward bus, then return on a dated service. An Island Line Day Ranger can support breaks at Brading or Sandown, but confirm the last practical train and ferry before leaving the railway. Smallbrook Junction is an interchange only when the separately operated Isle of Wight Steam Railway is serving it; do not assume every Island Line train stops there. An overnight in Shanklin makes a relaxed base for the east coast and avoids building the day around the final ferry connection.
