Which side to sit on the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway

Use both sides: the light railway twists through the hills and river valley, with no single continuous panorama.5

Facing forwards: favour both sides.

Golfa Bank supplies the climb, then farms, woodland, the viaduct and the Banwy river crossing break the journey into changing views. We recommend both sides because the railway curves through the terrain; its operator describes a twisting river-valley route, not a single continuous view on one side.1

Watch both sides for the Banwy crossing and farms, then the woodland and hill scenery approaching the descent from Golfa Bank. A return journey is a chance to sit at the other window and give the smaller scenes their turn; the same curves prevent one side dominating the whole route.1

Why ride it

The view from the train

The Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway began as a practical answer to a farming problem. The Banwy Valley’s communities needed a cheaper way to get supplies in and produce out to the wider railway network at Welshpool. Its narrow track allowed a route with sharp curves and substantial climbs across the rolling landscape. That original purpose remains visible in the way the train runs through farms and around the folds of the countryside. We like this journey for those intimate rural scenes, not for a single distant summit.

The operator’s history traces the line through Cambrian Railways, Great Western Railway and British Railways ownership. Passenger trains disappeared before the goods service ended; enthusiasts then brought the railway back into use. The old town section through Welshpool is no longer the public train route: today’s eastern terminus is Raven Square. Knowing that distinction avoids a common planning mistake. The National Rail station is still useful for arriving from Shrewsbury, but there is a separate walk across town to the heritage train.

The two ends give the ride a useful shape. Welshpool’s display sheds contain larger railway exhibits; at Llanfair, Connections explains the line’s people and international links, alongside the independent Cloverlands Model Car Museum. We suggest leaving time for at least one collection as well as the train. These are not interchangeable waiting rooms: they add the history behind the unusual mix of engines and carriages that makes this railway distinctive.

The preservation story also explains the carriage collection. The original passenger vehicles had been disposed of after the old passenger service ended, leaving the volunteers to find alternatives when they began rebuilding the railway. Surplus vehicles from an Admiralty railway helped that early revival. Today the operator describes trains from around the world running through the same countryside, so the balconied vehicles are part of a continuing story of adaptation. Look at the train as a collection of working vehicles as well as transport: their different origins help distinguish this rural line from a reconstructed main-line branch.

Best stops on the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway

Choose one main stop for a day out. Distances are one way from the station unless a circuit is stated; walking times are our estimates except where the attraction publishes one. Allow-time suggestions include time to look around.

Stop 1

Welshpool Raven Square

543

Begin at the heritage terminus for the display sheds and the walk through Welshpool.

From the station: about 1 mile (around 25 minutes’ walk)3

How we measure

Check the next train back before leaving the station

Request stop: No — use a service shown as calling here.5

What is nearby

  • Welshpool town and National Rail station — The operator’s published one-mile interchange crosses the town centre, making the streets part of a public-transport arrival.

  • Welshpool Display Sheds — Larger heritage railway exhibits are kept at the station; consult the railway for visitor availability.

From the station: On station premises; no public-road walk4

    How we measure

Zero denotes co-location on the station premises. The operator publishes the location, not a numeric walking distance; allow a few minutes within the site.

From the platform

For the town and National Rail station, reverse the operator’s arrival route: leave Raven Square towards the town centre, climb the road away from the roundabout and continue through the crossroads towards the main-line station. The published distance is about one mile.

Access: The heritage station is wheelchair accessible. The town interchange is a separate street walk with a climb and descent; ask the railway about a taxi if that route is unsuitable.

Food and drink

Allow time: Allow 45–90 minutes for the collection; add the cross-town walk separately.

Zero denotes co-location on the station premises. The operator publishes the location, not a numeric walking distance; allow a few minutes within the site.

Check the next train back before leaving the station

Request stop: No — use a service shown as calling here.5

What is nearby

  • Llanfair Connections and Cloverlands Model Car Museum — Railway heritage displays and the independent model-car collection share the station visitor-centre setting; check availability before making them the main reason to stop.

From the platform

Follow the station’s public signs from the platform for the tearoom and visitor centre, staying within the railway premises. There is no separate town or hill walk needed for these station attractions.

Access: The railway identifies Llanfair as a wheelchair-accessible station with dedicated parking. Discuss visitor-centre access and the adapted train space when booking, since the historic carriages need their own boarding arrangements.

Food and drink

  • Llanfair Station Tearoom — The operator lists hot and cold meals, drinks, cakes, snacks and ice cream, with covered seating and picnic tables.

Allow time: Allow 1–2 hours for food and the collections when available.

How to get to the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway

By train

Use Welshpool on the Cambrian main line from Shrewsbury, with onward National Rail connections towards Birmingham and other cities planned through the rail operator. The heritage railway publishes an approximately one-mile walk from Welshpool main-line station to Raven Square: head into town, continue through the crossroads, climb and then descend towards its roundabout. These are separate stations and tickets.37

By bus

Use Traveline Cymru to plan buses to Welshpool or Llanfair Caereinion for the actual day. Search the named heritage station, not simply Welshpool railway station, and check the walking link shown for the bus stop. We recommend the National Rail arrival at Welshpool with its published town walk if no suitable local bus connection is available.38

By car

Both principal stations adjoin the A458. Raven Square is at Welshpool’s west end; Llanfair station is at the town’s eastern approach. The railway publishes car parks at both, with no parking at intermediate stations. Use SY21 7LT for Raven Square or SY21 0SF for Llanfair and follow the brown signs.3

Returning from the far end

Return to the terminus where the day began unless a separate onward connection has been arranged. A National Rail departure from Welshpool needs the cross-town walk after reaching Raven Square; keep that interval outside the heritage ride. If spending longer at Llanfair, identify a return train with space under the selected ticket’s conditions.35

Day trip or overnight

Travel between Welshpool Raven Square and Llanfair Caereinion, taking a longer break at Llanfair for its tearoom and collections. If arriving by National Rail, include the separate cross-town walk in both directions. A half-day is a sensible starting allowance.1

Accessibility

Both principal stations are wheelchair accessible and have dedicated parking bays. Two adapted carriages are available; contact the railway to reserve suitable accommodation. The main-line interchange walk through Welshpool includes a climb and descent.4

When to go

Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway runs on selected dates in its operating calendar. Use the operating calendar and locomotive roster for the intended day. Collections have their own visitor arrangements and may depend on volunteers.1

Tickets

Book from the railway’s current journey options, choosing the correct starting station. Its standard return product lets you reserve an outward departure and use a later return subject to available space. That makes a terminus break possible, but it does not create an unlimited guarantee of seats. We suggest selecting the outward train first, then checking which return leaves enough time for the tearoom or town.

The railway offers different experiences and ticket arrangements, so a photograph of a particular carriage is not a promise that it will form your train. Use the locomotive roster if the engine matters to you, and discuss access before booking a wheelchair space. Single and intermediate-station tickets have their own purchase arrangements in the FAQ. For a first visit, the full journey between the two staffed termini is the simplest way to combine the landscape, refreshments and collections.56

Photography

At Llanfair, the operator recommends the platform for a close look at the locomotive; at Welshpool, water-taking can provide another railway scene. Work from the public areas and follow staff instructions. Include the carriage balconies and station surroundings in some pictures, because they distinguish the railway from a conventional main-line train. The display sheds offer details that can be missed while concentrating on a departing engine.

From the train, Golfa Bank and the curves through the countryside reward short sequences. Frame a farm, a river bend or the carriage ahead as the train changes direction. The operator allows standing on the open balconies of many carriages; use only the positions the crew permit, keep a secure hold and do not lean outside the vehicle. A seated window photograph remains a good option for anyone who cannot safely use a balcony.654

On board

The carriage collection has an international character, with open balconies on many vehicles. Some trains use a heritage diesel even though steam is the usual attraction; the railway publishes a locomotive roster for visitors who want to see the planned allocation. The ride includes tight curves and the steep Golfa Bank, which are central to the experience. Keep cameras and bags inside the safe passenger area and let the crew manage boarding before looking for a preferred window.

There are toilets at both main termini but none on the trains. Llanfair Station Tearoom is the substantial refreshment stop; Welshpool’s Station Shop supplies drinks, snacks and ice cream. Two adapted carriages provide wheelchair accommodation, with advance contact needed to check the suitable space. Both main stations have accessible facilities and parking, but a platform that is accessible does not remove the separate issues of boarding a historic carriage or walking over the hill through Welshpool.453

Frequently asked questions

How do I get to the start of the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway?

For public transport, arrive at Welshpool National Rail station and follow the operator’s one-mile town walk to Raven Square. Drivers may start at either main terminus beside the A458; Llanfair Caereinion has the railway’s tearoom and visitor-centre attractions.34

Can we stop for lunch at Llanfair Caereinion?

Llanfair Station Tearoom is the railway’s main food stop. Check its current arrangements and choose a later return that works with your ticket. The visitor centre and model-car museum may add a worthwhile longer break when available.45

Are the heritage and main-line stations connected?

They are different stations. The railway publishes a walk through Welshpool between them, including a climb and descent; trains do not carry passengers through the former street-running section to the main-line platform.32

How long is the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway?

We suggest half a day for a return between the two main termini with the Llanfair tearoom and collections. An arrival by National Rail adds the separate Welshpool town walk at each end, so keep that interval outside the heritage booking.6

Which side is best on the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway?

Golfa Bank supplies the climb, then farms, woodland, the viaduct and the Banwy river crossing break the journey into changing views. We recommend both sides because the railway curves through the terrain; its operator describes a twisting river-valley route, not a single continuous view on one side.1

Is the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway suitable for a day trip?

Yes. The two termini provide a clear plan: board at Raven Square or Llanfair, take the full line and leave time for the collections and refreshments. Use the conditions of the chosen return ticket when selecting a later train back.93

Is the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway accessible?

Both principal stations are wheelchair accessible and have dedicated parking bays. Two adapted carriages are available; contact the railway to reserve suitable accommodation. The main-line interchange walk through Welshpool includes a climb and descent. Contact WLLR to reserve an appropriate adapted-carriage space.4
