Why ride it
The view from the train
From Belfast, the Larne Line follows the northern shore of Belfast Lough through Whiteabbey and Carrickfergus. The castle stands beside the waterfront at Carrickfergus. Whitehead adds a seaside town near the Blackhead promontory before the railway turns towards Larne Lough. Larne Town and Larne Harbour are separate stops at the northern end. Carrickfergus provides the castle visit, Whitehead the coastal walk, and the final section the changing shoreline of the lough; each belongs to a different part of the route.
Discover Northern Ireland's car-free Whitehead itinerary combines railway travel with the town's coastal character and a later visit to Carrickfergus. Use it as inspiration. The right pace depends on whether you want a stroll, a longer walk or time inside the castle. You can enjoy Whitehead without committing to the entire Blackhead Coastal Path, especially if a gentle promenade visit is the outing that suits your party.
Carrickfergus brings a more historical focus to the day. Its castle and waterfront are a rewarding alternative to a longer coastal walk, with town time giving the train journey a clear purpose. If the full ride to Larne Harbour is your main interest, make a return break at just one of the intermediate towns. Leave the other as a reason to come back. That keeps a meal, the attraction and the scenic sections from competing for the same afternoon.

Best stops on the Larne Line
Choose one main stop for a day out. Distances are one way from the station unless a circuit is stated; walking times are our estimates except where the attraction publishes one. Allow-time suggestions include time to look around.
Request stop: No — use a service shown as calling here.1
What is nearby
Carrickfergus Castle — The preserved castle occupies the waterfront beside the harbour.
From the platform
Walk from Victoria Street to North Street, continue down Castle Street and use the crossing over Marine Highway for the castle entrance; the mapped route is about 0.35 miles.
Access: The station has step-free access with lifts. The street approach descends towards the waterfront; the castle has historic levels and stairs, so a step-free station does not imply full access around the keep.
Request stop: No — use a service shown as calling here.1
What is nearby
Whitehead Railway Museum — The Railway Preservation Society of Ireland’s museum tells the story of its preserved trains.
From the platform
Use the seaward side of Whitehead station. Follow the public street route through Kings Road towards Castleview Road and the museum entrance beyond the youth centre; the museum publishes a half-mile station walk.
Access: Translink lists step-free station access and boarding ramps through the conductor. The museum approach crosses the railway on a road bridge and includes a rise; use its pre-visit access guide for galleries and carriage access.

What is nearby
Larne Museum and Arts Centre — The museum occupies the former Carnegie Free Library on Victoria Road.
From the platform
Leave the station towards Circular Road, take the public route via Exchange Road and continue to Victoria Road for the museum, about 0.55 miles away.
Access: The station has step-free access and a boarding ramp through the conductor. The town walk uses pavements and crossings with a gradual rise; the museum publishes access information separately, so check the entrance arrangements before travelling.

How to get to the Larne Line
By train
Join a Larne-line service at Belfast Lanyon Place. Travellers arriving in Belfast by Enterprise or another rail line should use Translink’s planner for the connection to Lanyon Place and check whether the selected train continues beyond Whitehead to Larne.1925
By bus
Whitehead Railway Museum links Translink’s Belfast–Carrickfergus–Whitehead bus routes as another way to reach the town. Use the current bus planner for an onward coastal trip from Larne; a train arrival does not by itself provide a through coastal-bus connection.199
By car
Lanyon Place has private station parking according to Translink. Carrickfergus, Whitehead and Larne Town also have station car parks; select the starting point using the operator’s access information.25182024
Returning from the far end
For a town visit, board the return at Larne Town. If taking a ferry from Larne Harbour, select that station and check the ferry operator’s terminal connection separately; some trains on the line terminate at Whitehead.12624
Day trip or overnight
Ride from Belfast to Larne Harbour and break the return at Carrickfergus for the castle or Whitehead for the promenade and Blackhead Coastal Path. Larne Town and Larne Harbour are different stops, so select the one that fits the visit. The coastal path has its own conditions and access notices. Check the return departure before walking beyond Whitehead, and treat any onward ferry as a separate booking and transfer.1
Accessibility
Lanyon Place has step-free level access, lifts, a train-access ramp and staff assistance. Larne Harbour is unmanned but has step-free ramp access, an accessible toilet and a train-access ramp; ask the conductor if assistance is required. Facilities at intermediate stops vary, and the Blackhead walk is separate from the railway, so check both station and attraction access before travel.6
When to go
Use the dated operating calendar for the Larne Line, including any event-specific timetable and ticket conditions. For Larne Line, we would put Belfast Lough into useful daylight, allowing a longer destination pause when the season provides enough light. At Belfast, settle the homeward Larne Line service before beginning the planned walk. Any attraction added to the Larne Line outing has separate opening arrangements; use the operator for the railway’s actual operating dates.1
Tickets
Start by comparing Translink's Single and Day Return tickets for the stations you intend to use. The journey planner also offers 3 Day Select for a different pattern of travel. A simple return suits one destination; for a day involving more rides or buses, compare iLink's integrated travel within the appropriate zones. Use the published zone map to establish coverage.
The local ticket range is different from National Rail's Advance products, so buying before departure should not be taken as a promise of a train-specific Advance fare. Translink lists its own yLink and SmartPass concession arrangements. Ask about any National Railcard you hold before relying on a discount. For a return break at Whitehead or Carrickfergus, establish what the selected ticket allows as part of purchase, then choose a plan that fits it.9101112
Photography
Let the photographs combine the train journey with the place you visit: a lough-side glimpse, a town arrival and a stationary view of the castle or promenade. Choose a seat that gives you a comfortable view and keeps camera equipment within your own space. Belfast Lough lies on the right heading towards Larne along the Carrickfergus–Whitehead coast. The inland side carries the town and hills; Larne Lough provides another waterside section nearer the northern terminus.
Sun direction changes with date and departure, so judge it against the route. Shade the lens from carriage reflections, keep flash off and pause in tunnels or dark stretches. Save careful framing for the station break; that gives you time to compose the picture without missing the rest of the journey.7815
On board
Plan refreshments at your main stop and carry water for the ride. For food sales on a particular service, ask Translink. NI Railways' accessible-travel information describes accessible toilets aboard its trains, with boarding assistance addressed in the operator's guidance. Keep your day bag small enough to settle easily at your seat, leaving doors and the designated wheelchair areas clear.
Bicycles use limited designated space under Translink's conditions, with no reservation system and weekday morning restrictions. A cycling outing therefore needs a different plan from simply arriving with a passenger ticket. Replacement buses cannot carry bicycles under those conditions. Discuss unusual luggage or equipment with the operator before making it central to the day.1314
Frequently asked questions
How long is the Larne Line?
Use about an hour from Belfast to Larne Harbour as a planning outline, with the dated Translink itinerary setting the actual ride. A complete return and a substantial Whitehead or Carrickfergus visit need more time than the train journey alone.1
Which side is best on the Larne Line?
Belfast Lough lies on the right heading towards Larne along the Carrickfergus–Whitehead coast. The inland side carries the town and hills; Larne Lough provides another waterside section nearer the northern terminus.15
Is the Larne Line suitable for a day trip?
Yes. Choose Carrickfergus for the castle and waterfront, or Whitehead for a coastal stroll. A complete ride to Larne Harbour can be paired with one return break. Keep the second town optional so that the main visit stays relaxed.78
Is the Larne Line accessible?
Translink provides accessible rail guidance and station-specific information. The endpoints and your chosen stop need to work together, while the Blackhead walk has separate access requirements. Choose a promenade or station-focused visit if a longer path does not suit your party.137
How do I get to the start of the Larne Line?
Join a Larne-line service at Belfast Lanyon Place. Travellers arriving in Belfast by Enterprise or another rail line should use Translink’s planner for the connection to Lanyon Place and check whether the selected train continues beyond Whitehead to Larne.1925
