Britain's best coastal train journeys

These routes earn their place through sustained sea, estuary or coastal views—not a fleeting glimpse between tunnels. Use each full guide to choose a window.

By Does Your Duck Quack ·

For a first coast-facing trip, we would choose a route where the sea or an estuary forms a meaningful part of the ride and a seaside destination gives the day an ending. St Ives Bay suits a compact Cornish outing; the Cambrian Coast offers a longer Welsh holiday; Northumberland can make a journey between cities scenic. This selection is our editorial view of useful coastal railway days, with the filter below helping narrow the alternatives.

A coastal route is rarely beside the water throughout. Country stretches, town approaches, cuttings and curves change the view, so read the named-landmark advice in each guide. Choose the right direction and useful daylight before worrying about a seat number. The opposite window can still offer countryside and railway detail. A particular sea-facing section gives a stronger reason for a side recommendation than a broad claim about the whole region.

The coast also changes the kind of stop that belongs in the day. A short branch can leave time for a beach or town walk, while a longer line may deserve an overnight. Pick one main pause and include the journey from station to shore, with the return already established. A harbour view does not automatically create a ferry connection, and seeing an island from the train does not settle its visiting arrangements.

Weather and access should shape the outing without overwhelming it. Choose a walk that suits the party, carry suitable layers for time away from the carriage and use the attraction’s own information where tidal access matters. Favour a town base when a beach-only plan would make poor weather disappointing. Scheduled lines and heritage outings appear together here, but their ticket and operating arrangements differ. Follow the full route guide for both direction cards, official operator links, planned stops and access questions, then use the filter to compare the journeys that fit the holiday you actually want.

Make the journey work for you

Use these planning notes alongside the individual route guides.

Match the ride to your available time

Choose whether the coast is the main event or one part of a day out. Compare the listed one-way durations before choosing a long coastal route; add the return journey and any station transfers to your own day plan.

Read the direction before choosing a window

The window advice in each route guide applies to the direction printed beside it. On your return, reverse left and right relative to the direction of travel. A preferred side is a viewing suggestion, not a promised reserved seat.

Separate the train view from the beach visit

A line with sea views does not necessarily stop beside a beach. If getting onto the shore is part of your day, check the walking route from your chosen station, including slopes and the time needed to return.

Give one stop enough time

Start with one coastal stop rather than several. Work back from the train you want to catch home and leave room for the walk back to the station. Check whether your ticket permits a break of journey before leaving the train.

Breaking Your Train Journey | National Rail

Check that the scenic section runs by rail

Before committing to the day, look for engineering work on the section you most want to see. A replacement bus changes the viewing experience as well as the journey. Recheck any connections against the revised timetable.

Check rail replacement guidance

Use Translink for Northern Ireland

For the Derry–Coleraine, Belfast–Bangor and Belfast–Larne guides, check your actual starting station, departures and connections with Translink. Build the day from its current journey planner rather than assuming the route title is a complete service timetable.

Translink journey planning tools

Make photographs a bonus

Keep your camera ready before the view arrives, turn off flash to reduce reflections, and put it down for a while too. Photograph from your seat without blocking the aisle or the view of other passengers; the journey should still work if the light is flat.
